The Smoochies Tour led by none other than Asknikko, headlined by Princess Nokia sold out the stop in Kansas City, Missouri at Uptown Theater on this beautiful Kansas City day. The line at the doors to get in started early- with people being spotted queued up by 10am.
Attendees lined the side of the Uptown already dressed head to toe in homemade outfits adorned with sparkles, trinkets, buttons, and even a pickle jar in hopes of being brought on stage to be crowned the cities Smoochie girl by Ashnikko, a trend she has started at every stop of the tour to highlight some of the beautiful craftsmanship her fans put into their outfits to attend the show.
PRINCESS NOKIA GALLERY
Princess Nokia, a NY based rapper, singer, songwriter and activist opened the show. She was joined on stage by two musicians, a guitarist and a DJ to help bring her set to life. She performed hits like “Drop Dead Gorgeous,” “Gossip Girl,” and to finish her 30 minute set, “Harley Quinn.” Princess Nokia felt like the perfect opener for Ashnikko with her songs dropping heavy doses of bass and amping up the crowd. Nokia notably spent quite a bit of time at the barricade interacting with fans, staying out after her set a bit longer to hand things out from the stage and making sure each fan felt seen.
Ashnikko started her set next, opening the night very theatrically, which is obviously a theme for them. They came crawling out of a tiny door along with two dancers in a very “Alice in Wonderland” meets girl pop way. Their entire stage set seemed to reflect that of Alice in Wonderland, but instead of a rabbit hole, we are taking a trip into the purse of Ashnikko. Their first song as they emerge from the tiny door was “Sticky Fingers” from their new album.
ASHNIKKO GALLERY
The Ashnikko outfit and the outfits of the backup dancers were very similar to the ones we see in the crowd- feeling homemade and thrown together in an organized yet chaotic nature that encapsulates Ashnikko as an artist. Ash spent lots of time during the night speaking to fans about various topics, like the music they listened to and was inspired by growing up, and the stores they visited while stopping in KC (shout out River Market Antiques!) Their setlist consisted of old songs and new, such as “Working Bitch,” “Manners,” “You Make Me Sick,” from her previous albums, and “Microplastics,” “Skin Cleared,” and “Chichinyna,” from their newest album. They ended the night with a notable performance of their hit song “Slumber Party” featuring an appearance from Princess Nokia, and an energy filled performance of fan favorite, “Daisy.”
